The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan has undoubtedly become one of the biggest failures of the United States, but it pains me more that it’s not just the U.S. paying the consequences, but the overall “fight” against terrorism, and those who still are in Afghanistan.
You don’t need to be an expert to know what egregious human rights violations the Taliban has planned, most especially for any LGBTQ+ persons still there. From a surge of rape, assaults, threats and detention, to living in fear, even from family, friends or romantic partners (who for their own safety may resort to selling out). The Guardian and Human Rights Watch detail the horrors.
